The UK Food Valley and Greater Lincolnshire Regional Defence and Security Cluster co-hosted a regional first, cross sector collaborative event showcasing the parallels between two vital sectors in the Greater Lincolnshire economy.

Working in partnership these clusters came together to explore how agri-tech and defence-tech can collaborate to boost innovation, resilience, and national security.

From historical cross-sector innovation like William Foster’s world first tank, developed in Lincolnshire during World War 1, to modern challenges in AI, data sharing, and lightweight vehicle design, the event showcased how these industries can learn from each other and grow together.

Key highlights included:

  • Councillor Liam Kelly’s call to embed food and farming into the national innovation conversation
  • Julian Free CBE’s emphasis on pace and SME-driven innovation
  • Professor Simon Pearson’s insights on research translation and commercialisation
  • Thought-provoking panels on data, AI ethics, and skills development
  • Louise Sutherland’s powerful reminder: “There are only nine meals between mankind and anarchy.”

The discussions also spotlighted Lincolnshire’s unique talent pool from veterans to military spouses and SEND individuals, and the importance of talent retainment in the region.

This event was a testament to the power of collaboration with follow-up actions now underway, and the UK Food Valley will be excited to see how these partnerships will shape the future of food security and national resilience.

A huge thank you again to all the partners, panellists and presenters.
