As MD of MODAL Training in Immingham Hugh Callaway was delighted to be chosen to deliver two Skills Bootcamps on behalf of the Greater Lincolnshire LEP.

The training was delivered to 23 learners and covered two areas that play an important role in our logistics sector: Shipping and Maritime and Transport Planning and Management.

“Our application for funding was based on our knowledge of the employer market,” said Hugh. “I’ve had conversations with employers in transport and shipping who struggle to find people or who have trouble training the people they have.

“So our Skills Bootcamps were a mix of the two – both training people for a new career and upskilling people who are already in the industry.”

The Shipping and Maritime course was designed to give people the skills to get an entry level position in ports or the maritime and shipping sector, while the Transport Planning Skills Bootcamp was aimed at new entrants to the industry as well as those already employed and looking to upskill.

“In the logistics sector, for transport planning, there are no real courses and qualifications below the existing transport manager qualification, and people who enter the industry have to learn skills on the job,” said Hugh.

“We identified a gap there so we created a course which gave learners the skills required to become effective transport planners and also an insight into progression to a transport manager qualification.”

Feedback following the Skills Bootcamps has been positive.

“Employers on the transport planning side all confirmed that staff can now take on added responsibilities which they couldn’t do without the training,” said Hugh.

“On the shipping and maritime side we got lots of positive feedback from learners saying the added skills will allow them to progress into employment.”

Further information about new Skills Bootcamps in Greater Lincolnshire will be published by the end of June 2023.
