Construction firm nmcn Plc is proud of the Positive Impact Plan which it launched last year.

During the pandemic it’s vital that businesses keep the wellbeing of their employees uppermost in their mind and think about the impact their business might have on the wider community.

Team Lincolnshire member nmcn Plc – a leading construction company delivering major built environment and critical national infrastructure projects across the UK – is proud of the Positive Impact Plan which it launched last year.

nmcn’s Positive Impact Plan 2025 is the company’s sustainability strategy to fully underpin and bring to life the company’s purpose – to have “a positive impact on everything we touch”.

In 2019 the business set 2025 goals, focusing its efforts on reinvigorating and evolving its sustainability ambition to impact on the areas that matter the most. It focuses on five key priorities which were launched throughout the year.

To date, here are some of nmcn’s key achievements within each priority:

Our People

  • To support colleagues in giving back to the community, nmcn launched its employee volunteering policy, giving everyone across the business the opportunity to take three days each year to volunteer – or up to five days in special circumstances or for community projects abroad. In 2019, nmcn colleagues spent 1,391 hours volunteering.
  • The behavioural safety programme Collaborative Safety has been rolled out across the business. nmcn has also invested heavily in its approach to mental health and wellbeing, including a company-wide mental health risk assessment, which received its first external recognition in the shape of an award for Health and Safety Initiative of the Year in the 2020 Water Industry Awards.

Our Impact

  • nmcn has produced its very own business-wide Low Carbon Strategy with a focus on tangible actions, from design through to building products and transport. It has also consolidated its energy supply to just two providers, giving greater transparency to data and energy consumption and enabling the business to switch to green electricity.

Our Communities

  • nmcn launched its Pilot Flagship Schools Programme with St Mary Magdalene CE Primary School in Sutton-in-Ashfield which has transformed the school curriculum. The company has worked with the teachers to support their lessons with tailored construction activities in line with the national curriculum and Ofsted standards, to inspire future generations to consider careers in construction. 140 children between the ages seven and 11 had a STEM-focused meaningful engagement in the 2019/2020 academic year.
  • nmcn launched its first corporate charity partnership with mental health charity Mind. The aim is to engage colleagues, customers and supply chain in fundraising activities through their own JustGiving page.
  • A prisons programme ran successfully throughout 2019. nmcn’s Construction Academy Programme trained 31 people in a Diploma in Construction and Civil Engineering Services and CSCS Card to support employability of ex-offenders.

Thinking Differently

  • In October 2019, nmcn published its first ever white paper: the Manifesto for Change which aims to influence the mindset of those who are yet to embrace new technologies and who have the power to transform the industry. The white paper suggests that much of the talk around digital offsite build initiatives remains the same as it was over a decade ago, and that many businesses and many construction firms are still not making any significant changes. It suggests that by combining offsite build and digital transformation, the entire construction sector could be reshaped for the future.

Better Business

  • In 2019, nmcn improved its payment statistics to 44 average payment days and continued to pay its supply chain on time.
  • As part of doing Better Business, nmcn actively worked on engaging its customers and completed 234 customer satisfaction and expectations forms across a variety of projects. It has been recognised for the quality of health and safety documents and people’s behaviour that exceeded expectations in 2019. In line with the work to proactively collaborate with their stakeholders, nmcn has issued a revised code of conduct document.

“Our Positive Impact Plan brings our purpose to life by enabling our colleagues to understand how they can bring a positive impact through their everyday actions,” said Fay Paterson, Business Development Manager at nmcn and a Team Lincolnshire member.

“Our focus continues to be on delivering a positive impact in everything we do, which is key for achieving our vision of being the best performing company in our chosen markets.”
